Get Acquainted Linky!

I have really missed Latoya's Get Acquainted Linkys these past couple of weeks. I am so glad she is back this week with another one!

This week's topic is three questions:
1. What made you decide to become a teacher?
2. What has been your most rewarding experience as a teacher?
3. If you were not a teacher, what would you be?

1. What made you decide to become a teacher?
I had always wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I was the child who would set up all her dolls and play school for hours and hours. Even convincing my younger brother and sister to join in. In middle school, I fell in love with Home Economics and decided then that I would become a Home Economics teacher. I took all the classes offered in high school and enrolled at The University of Alabama intending to major in Home Economics education. The summer after my sophomore year, I had to take an Introduction to Interior Design class and loved it. I ended up changing my major that summer. 3 years later I graduated with my degree in Interior Design but had absolutely no desire to pursue a career in that field. I knew that education was really what I wanted to do but I didn't have the heart to tell my parents that I wanted to change majors again. So I graduated in May and by August was enrolled at Jacksonville State University to get my Master's Degree in Education. Not once have I regretted that decision!

2. What has been your most rewarding experience as a teacher?
I have been teaching for 8 years so there have been many rewarding experiences. I think the ones that stick out for me the most are when you see those little light bulbs go off and a child who was struggling finally gets it. I have also received some very sweet and heart-felt letters from parents that I will always treasure.

3. If you were not a teacher, what would you be?
Well obviously trying something other than teaching didn't quite work out for me. :) The only thing that I could possibly do other than teaching would be to be a stay at home mom with my two boys. Unfortunately, the pay for that job wouldn't quite be able to pay the bills.

I hope everybody had a fabulous Teacher Appreciation Day last week! You deserve it!

P.S. Only 1 more Monday after today! I think I can make it!

Five for Friday and May Currently

What a week! All I can say is TGIF! I've missed the last couple of weeks but I am back this week to link up with Kacey over at Doodle Bugs Teaching for her weekly Five for Friday.

1. May Currently
I can't believe it is already May! This year has just flown by! I am going to add my May currently as one of my randoms.

Most important item on this list: Only 3 more Mondays!!! Woohoo! Go check out the other May currentlys over at Oh' Boy 4th Grade!

2. STAR Reading Test

Anybody else do the STAR reading and math tests? Oh boy. To say that I was stressed out about the reading part is an understatement! We took the test yesterday morning and I didn't sleep at all the night before because I was so worried about it. But guess what? My firsties ROCKED that test! I mean every single one of them! They all showed at least a year's worth of growth and most of them were close to two. They are all reading on at least a second grade level, even my little struggler that I was worried about. Now we move on to the math part on Monday but I am not quite as stressed about that one because my kids are really strong in math.

3. Next Year
Well I found out a couple of weeks ago that two of the girls that I teach with were probably going to have to move down to Kindergarten next year. We have known all year that one of them were because we had 5 units in first grade this year and only 3 in Kindergarten. But then about 2 weeks ago we were told that there would only be 3 first grades next year. I don't know what I would have done this year without these two. I could not ask for two better coworkers or friends. They were also the teachers that I wanted for my little one coming up to first grade next year. We have all been holding out a little hope that maybe they wouldn't have to move after all, but at our faculty meeting on Wednesday, our principal told the whole faculty about it so we think it's pretty offical. This has just been an emotional and stressful week for me.

4. Birthday Party!

On to happy things! This weekend is my boys' birthday party and they are so excited! This has of course added to my stressful week, but not as much as in years past. We are doing a swimming party at the indoor pool at the local YMCA and should be a lot of fun. I am most excited about getting to see my sister and her family! We haven't seen them since Thanksgiving because they were in Houston over Christmas while my brother in law was receiving raditation treatment. Hopefully only
2-4 more chemo treatments and he will officially be in remission!

5. Giveaway

I am part of a great giveaway going on right now.
